Designer Insights by Steve Jennings:
Lighting Director Will Smith programmed the Conan Gray tour along with Lighting Designer Hubert Gagnon at Solotech in Las Vegas over the course of five days. “We were both coming off of other projects so it was good to be able to just sit down at Solotech and be able to focus specifically on this project. Hubert would give me a lot of direction in regards to each song but was very receptive to bouncing ideas off one another and we got into a really good work flow. Programming with Hubert was an absolute pleasure and one I hope to repeat often,” Smith says.
The show is mostly timecoded on both the video and lighting side of it, notes Smith. “I genuinely had no issues with the running of everything. The video is offloaded onto Hippo Timeline+ on our two Boreals which makes consistency on a day to day basis excellent and the running of the video side really simple. I started using Timeline back in 2019 and the Timeline+ stuff has really just improved it,” he says.
“With Conan roaming the stage so much, having the Robospot really gives everyone a lot of freedom with the show,” Smith adds. “Conan can have moments in the crowd as well or on top of the LED structure so we always want him to be seen. Conan is a really sweet soul and a consummate professional. He and the incredible Creative Director Benjamin Dupont did such an excellent job with creating the show that I must admit directing the show almost feels like I’m cheating a little. I’ve genuinely loved working on this, with Benjamin and with an amazing designer like Hubert. Then to top it all off is the immense talent of Conan and working with the great production crew- Tour, Production & Stage Manager Austin Luna and Video Crew Chief Adam Farinacci.”
