Verge Aero flew a dazzling drone show on the premiere episode of NBC’s America’s Got Talent: Extreme and received the Golden Buzzer from legendary judge Simon Cowell. This honorary signal from the buzzer sends Verge Aero directly to the show finale to compete against six other finalists for the $500,000 prize. The first show of the new AGT spin-off—which focuses on stunt performers and dare-devil acts that can’t be confined to the physical stage—aired on Monday, Feb. 21.
Verge Aero’s 160 synchronized drones flew mesmerizing patterns optimized for the judges’ site lines and viewed by a live audience. To the tune of Coldplay’s A Sky Full of Stars, the drones presented 3D structures which were the size of 30-story skyscrapers, along with a rainbow wave, swirls, moving star shapes and the outline of the United States. It ultimately morphed into a giant show logo of AGT in the night sky as its finale.
Industry veteran Nils Thorjussen told Cowell that they have devoted seven years to developing the technology to power the drone shows. Tony Samaritano, one of the company’s cofounders, said, “The opportunity to perform on AGT Extreme is so special to us. Engineers are usually hidden behind the scenes and rarely have a platform to showcase their work or even receive credit for it. We are so excited to be here—as the actual talent!—to show the world the magic of drone light shows and to inspire the next generation of engineers and STEM.”
While Cowell expressed surprise and delight over the very idea of drone light shows, many in the live event industry have enjoyed Verge Aero’s shows over the skies of an LDI trade show in the company’s early years. Verge Aero has since amazed with a long list of projects including shows for President Biden’s victory party, the US Armed Forces Day, American Independence Day celebrations, and just recently, to cap off the winning season for the Cincinnati Bearcats at Nippert Stadium in Ohio.
