Back in 2019, Ayrton released their most powerful moving profile fixture: the Huracán Profile. That fixture boasted 53,000 lumens of raw power, designed to be the workhorse of many large-scale productions. The graphic projections emitted from this model were deemed awesome by all, making this fixture stand out from competitor’s models that had similar size and output.
Ayrton has now created a version of this fixture designed for long throw applications, the Huracán LT (Long Throw), which is designed for arena, stadium, and outdoor throws where one may wish to illuminate the side of a mountain from a mile away. The basic difference between the two models is the frame is slightly larger in the LT model, to allow the unit to deliver a 15:1 zoom ratio and a range of 3.5° to 53°, versus the 10:1 zoom ratio at 6° to 60° of the Huracán Profile.
The optics have been redesigned, adding a 225mm-diameter, extra-large frontal lens (which weighs 7 kg). The proprietary optical system has 13 lenses, all of which are tempered, anti-reflective coated lenses to allow for maximum output of the beam. The result is a 6,700K color temperature output. Thus, the extra room needed for this optical system extends it to 34” in height.
To offset the heat from this large format moving light, Ayrton came up with some new technology. Along with a larger frame comes a new advanced liquid cooling system. There are also variable speed fans that are self-adjusting for quiet modes. Selectable ventilation user modes including a ‘Super Silent Mode’ have been implemented. Heat sinks made of copper and aluminum aid with the heat dispersion as well.
The head itself is constructed from aluminum and steel plates, while the base is all aluminum. A cover made from fire retardant ABS PC protects the internal elements and assists in giving this model an IP20 rating. Two side handles on the base are available to lift this 118 lb. model, which I note is 20 lbs. heavier than the Huracán Profile. The fixture is a two person hang from case to truss.
The light source is a new high-efficiency 1,000W LED module which offers 75,000 lumens plus an 8,200K pure white light engine to start (6,700K CCT open). This new light source along with the new optics system now delivers 51,000+ lumens of output with a much tighter beam. We note the native CRI is >70 and its TM-30 is Rf: 72.6, Rg: 92.1. The lamp life will last 40,000 hours and is a flicker free source—good for working with cameras.
Colors and Breakups
Fans of the Huracán Profile fixture will be pleased to know that the LT model includes the same patent-pending complex color mixing system with double CMY saturation as the original. Mixing a deep congo blue with this fixture is easily obtained with minimal light loss.
The Huracán line is still the only fixture I have run across that offers individual CTB, CTO, and CTP variable color correction channels, making this fixture ideal for all film work. A six-hole color wheel offers a rainbow assortment of saturated colors, executing a color wheel roll flawlessly. The half color options are perfect choices for any LD.
The effects section includes two rotating gobo wheels, each with seven HD glass gobos. Wheel one now contains generic sized groups of bars and dots in different arrays that define aerial beams and are optimum for shooting long distances. The second wheel contains a few throwbacks from the original model and is more adept for texturing scenery.
Given the long throw application, Ayrton opted for some chunky, metal gobos on the second wheel. This allows for maximum light output as compared to using glass gobos (which reduce the output) for aerials. As for the metal gobos, those are made from an aluminum alloy which can withstand the internal temperature with no problem. All gobos on both wheels are rotating/indexable and can be easily replaced. I do note the loss of those dual-rotation gobo cassettes which were so popular in the profile model but am glad to see the dual animation wheels are still included.
The animation wheels are unique in how they function. Each animation wheel is used separately with the first one being a monochromatic multi-position graphical animation effects wheel with continuous rotation in both directions. The wheel is oversized for the beam slot, which allows the user to determine which part of the animation wheel should be in the focal path. This makes it simple for the lines to rotate horizontally or vertically and all points in between.
The second animation wheel features a color graphic animation effect wheel. This is a multicolored (RGBCYM) gobo reminiscent of the old oil and water projections of yore with smooth curved shapes of various colors intertwined. This makes for great wall illustrations at a party or nightclub. The user can align the wheel however they would like in the focal path for different looks and mix other colors to change it up. But where it really excels is when it’s rotating behind a static gobo, making multi-colored changing looks in the pattern. It takes the idea of half-colors to the next level and is psychedelic. Ayrton refers to these effects as ‘graphicadelic’.
There are two separate prisms offered that rotate bidirectionally at variable speeds. One is a circular 5-way prism, the other is a 4-holed linear line. They can be used simultaneously.
Countless Features
The zoom itself is very fast for its range and can dial down to an impressive 3.5° (or expand to 53°), a 15:1 ratio, in less than half a second. With this tight beam and the 225mm frontal lens users get a collimated beam that will shoot a long distance. The 15-blade iris mechanism can snap quickly and reduce the beam size to 15° of its full output. One can easily use either of these attributes with an effects engine.
The dimmer is electronic, allowing a perfectly linear curve from 0 to 100% without any color shift. Even at 1% the output glows. The strobe effects are the typical sync, pulse, and random types, with speed adjustment from 1 to 25 flashes per second.
There are two frost flags that are variable and come in smoothly from opposite sides of the beam. One offers a slight diffusion of the beam, perfect for texturing the stage with patterns. The other offers a full frost, which makes for a great wash light output or one that can eliminate or reveal a gobo pattern through morphing.
The four-way framing system is very fast with each blade allowing for a full curtain style wipe of the entire beam. The improved ±60° rotation makes it possible to cut the beam down on any side.
The movement system is extremely accurate via high-res stepper motors operated via microprocessors guaranteeing extreme accuracy and sturdy movement, all of which is necessary for laying textures on objects at long distances. Movement wise, the fixture takes 2.5 seconds to rotate the 540° pan. Despite its physical size, executing circle effects at a reasonable speed can be easily accomplished.
Control wise, the Huracán LT offers three modes of operation, with the extended mode requiring 70 channels of DMX. This mode is recommended as channel 70 offers the experienced programmer a plethora of fixture options at their fingertips, as opposed to the brain of the fixture.
DMX can be obtained via 5 pin XLR or through RJ45 connectors (Art-Net). Addresses and modes can be set manually at the built-in LCD controller or via RDM. Signal can also be obtained wirelessly through an internal CRMX TiMo RDM receiver from LumenRadio.
