The University of Wisconsin – Madison: Department of Theater and Drama is proud to announce two online summer courses specifically designed for the needs of K-12 theater, music, and dance teachers, and those who work on those shows: Audio for Performing Arts Teachers, and Lighting for Performing Arts Teachers.

Audio for Performing Arts Teachers
From the basic terminology through the knowledge needed to be able to select and place microphones, connect components, and run a sound board, this course aims to help you be confident and competent running the audio equipment in your school venue. Sound effect selection, sound design, and how to write cues for easy execution are among other items covered. The goal is for the participant to feel confident running the audio equipment in their school venue. Guest experts include people who work on Broadway, tours, and other professional venues.

Lighting for Performing Arts Teachers
Starting with the fundamentals of conventional and LED light sources, through fixture selection and placement, to lighting control board programming – this course aims to help you feel confident running the lighting equipment in your school venue. How spotlights can save your show and how to write lighting cues that “talk” are among other topics. Guest experts include people who work on Broadway, tours, and other professional venues.

“Many teachers have never had an opportunity for professional level training in the technical aspects of theater because of their busy schedules. We designed these classes as part of a series covering safety, operations, and administration to meet their unique needs for both performances and teaching,” said Kristi Ross-Clausen, a former K-12 music/theater teacher, IATSE trainer, and frequent conference presenter who designed the classes and will lead them. “Advanced HS students, parents who help with school shows, administrators who use the space, and school board members are also welcome!”

Either course can be taken for 1-3 credits. They are 100% online, asynchronous, and have some flexibility built in to respect the schedule for those doing summer shows.
