Chauvet Professional Provides the Industry with Multiple Options in Linear Lighting Fixtures

Chauvet Professional has always meant having choices. Almost all of their lines of lighting instruments offer a variety of excellent fixtures to choose from — for each of the ever-expanding needs of a lighting designer in today’s market, there is a Chauvet Professional solution. This article focuses on linear rows of light sources in one thin, long body — commonly referred to as strip lights. Whether you’re looking for bountiful colors on a pixel-mappable strip, the ability to light an entire cyc evenly, a footlight that can rid the raccoon eyes and dark patch under a cowboy hat, or one that can illuminate an audience, these fixtures feature hardcore engineering by industry professionals with thoughtful fixture design. Take a look at the different options Chauvet Professional offers in a strip light.

‡‡         COLORado Solo Batten 4

COLORado series products historically have been reliable touring fixtures, designed for maximum road beatings and professional level trust-in-use. They also have quite the output, even in the most saturated colors; Chauvet is excellent at LED quality control and keeping the most stringent color binning in their manufacturing process. That means their LED color quality is consistent, which allows them to make large strides in other areas, like fixture features and solving customer challenges. Chauvet Professional’s COLORado Solo Batten 4, for example, is a photon cannon made for lighting vertical surfaces and filling the role of your general linear wash. What you’ll find is that you’re going to purchase a system of 12-24 of these units for rentals and production, and by your year’s end, you’ll have expanded your inventory even further with the Solo Batten 4 because of its usefulness. Throughout the COLORado Solo battens, you’ll find some outstanding features that are standard across the line: Adjustable PWM, several different fixture profiles for utilizing the fixture across a variety of applications, multiple protocol operation (Art-Net, sACN, copper DMX, RDM), among many other useful additions to the fixtures, such as its IP65 rating.

COLORado Solo Batten 4 is the little brother to the 1m batten and can fit in tight places. It can be used to wash walls and cycloramas, while remaining pixel mappable. Its face can be divided into four individual color blasters that can be used in infinite applications. Line a truss with a row of Solo Batten 4s as blinders or use them configured into a wall of strips for a powerful and unique backdrop for your production. Unique and exclusive to this fixture is the design of the optics. The cells are square and the apparent source is also square. Gone are the dark corners between cells you notice on other fixtures. It makes a true solid bar of light, which was the design goal. No round pegs in square holes, so-to-speak.

The COLORado Solo Batten 4 contains 48 LEDs (8 red, 8 green, 8 blue, 8 amber, 16 white) at 3W each. The color temperature range extends from 1,800°K to 8,000°K, providing a column of light in four individual cells that are homogenized when washing. The column of light from this fixture has a field spread of 34° H x 30° V. The “Wall Wash” filter included with the fixture opens the column of light to 66° H x 32° V. The color mixing is very deep and variable, as is the COLORado line itself; the RGBAW layout of the Solo Batten 4 allows you both the rock and roll palette that is always desired, but also that pastel range that is always necessary.

The integrated trunnions easily hold the fixture up in a variety of floor positions. Whichever mounting device you require can easily attach to this. Chauvet Professional designed the Solo Batten 4 to take its cable inputs at an angle into the base, allowing the unit to sit on the floor and not stress the connector while focusing it.

‡‡         COLORado Batten 72X

One of the original COLORado fixtures was the COLORado Batten 72 Tour, which is an LED linear strip comprised of 72 discreet colored LEDs, segmented, and bright. The COLORado Batten 72X is a serious upgrade to this original uplighting ninja used all over the world. This is yet another product from that you end up purchasing a system for use in your inventory, and then discover just how many jobs the Batten 72 can actually accomplish. From washing walls and entryways to throwing light across a stage or ballroom, this a multi-tasking fixture.

COLORado Batten 72X is IP65-rated for temporary outdoor use and accepts DMX and RDM. Batten 72X has 72 LEDs (18 red, 18 green, 18 blue, 9 white, 9 amber) at 3W each, and can be divided into three segments by personality. The fixture itself has 18 personalities to help suit the application you want. In terms of its column of light, Batten 72X puts out a field of 39° H x 34° V, and has a color range of 3,200°K to 10,000°K. This fixture is a mainstay of inventories worldwide.

Like the Solo Batten 4 and many other fixtures in the COLORado line, Batten 72X has adjustable PWM for on-camera flicker control — this is for camera flicker-free operation. Keeping with the line-wide features of the COLORado line, Batten 72X has built-in and customizable auto-programs, color presets, and other auto features for using the fixtures without control. The fixture’s trunnions keep it standing on the floor and are also the mount point for your rigging hardware. They now have ¼ turn adapters for Omega brackets as well. The COLORado Batten 72X, like the other battens, has a built-in glare shield that lives within the body of the fixture and can be deployed in moments, for applications like cyc lighting and using the fixtures as footlights.

‡‡         STRIKE Saber

One of the new product offerings from Chauvet Professional is a fixture called the STRIKE Saber, from the STRIKE line of strobes and blinders. The Saber is a strobe, a tunable warm white wash features individual control of each cell. A key feature in the STRIKE line is the red shift function, one that mimics that luscious tungsten decay that’s all the rage with designers.

A pixel-mapping batten, a floor-mountable talent uplighter with homogenized washing, even at close range. This fixture truly has so many uses that it’s difficult to place it into one category. Mount them on your truss for an individual cell system of undulating spots across your rig, or sneak them into the rig as a pixel mapping system; of course, this is in addition to the other washing features, like using the STRIKE Saber from the top as an audience blinder system all the way down to the floor to uplight the band. Its versatility is only surpassed by its performance.

STRIKE Saber has 10 LEDs (Warm White/Amber) at 17W each, making this fixture resemble a rocket when stood vertically. It puts out a column of light with a field that’s 35° H by 30° V, and like the COLORado line, Variable PWM is standard. STRIKE Saber has a center mounted floor stand to maintain solid footing in whichever configuration you choose, and a clamp or other rigging hardware can be quickly added to the floor stand for rigging up.

It’s my professional opinion that you need to check out these three outstanding offerings from Chauvet Professional — the STRIKE Saber, the COLORado Batten 72X, and the COLORado Solo Batten 4. I hope you are as impressed with the continuation of high quality and useful fixture features that keep Chauvet Professional such a trustworthy brand worldwide.
