The stage, prior to its opening

Staging Concepts Knocks a Home Run at San Diego’s Petco Park

Staging Concepts, headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, is nationally known for its ability to come up with creative solutions for any facility or venue needs. The company provides superior staging solutions for performing art centers, worship halls, hospitality venues, and sports stadiums and have been doing so since 1990. They have grown into a leading designer and manufacturer of portable staging equipment. One of their latest concepts takes them back once again to Petco Park, the baseball stadium home to the MLB Padres in San Diego, CA.

The modular stage at Petco Park now welcomes multiple performances throughout the year.

‡‡         A Long-Term Alliance

“We have been working on projects with Petco Park for several years,” says Tom Bateman, regional sales manager for the Western region of Staging Concepts. “So when the park decided to erect an outdoor stage, our relationship with their operations team helped make us the preferred choice for this operation.”

With the newly constructed outdoor concert stage, the stadium will now also attract patrons outside of the typical baseball fan and season ticket holder for events throughout the year. The stage is demountable and modular to adapt as the needs change for performances. It can be reconfigured to change the size or shape. The support structure and stairs are also adjustable so the stage height can change if needed, or adapt to uneven terrain.

“The concept for the stage was designed by Petco Park and their design team,” said Bateman. “We helped determine what stage equipment would be a good starting place to fulfill their current needs.”

Staging Concepts provides custom staging solutions for venues all across the US.

‡‡         “Play Ball!”

The stage was a rush order to ensure that Petco Park was equipped with a performance space for opening day. “With an order confirmed on March 4, the stage was shipped, built and ready for performances on opening day on March 28,” said Bateman. Actual setup took place overnight with local labor and ballpark personnel.

“We work on projects all over the U.S., and all of our equipment is manufactured in Minneapolis,” added Bateman. The Petco Park stage required a dedicated truck, but Staging Concepts will also ship LTL or rail.

Situated in the “Park at the Park,” a 2.7-acre grassy area outside the outfield wall, but within the Petco Park gates, Staging Concepts’ 64-by-28-foot custom concert stage is designed to adapt to various concert needs. The roof system at Petco Park is permanent and was assembled by the stadium’s contractor. The stage itself is designed to be weather resistant, field repairable, modular and adjustable in size and height, with adjustable stairs and guardrail that can accommodate a wide array of configurations.

The height of the stage can be modified through telescoping legs and leveling feet. The stage platforms are designed to be able to setup in any configuration and lock together to create one solid surface. Made of SC90 Platform, which is the cornerstone of Staging Concepts’ equipment line, they are well known for their strength, versatility and durability. Incorporating an aluminum extruded frame, the deck combines a thick plywood substrate with an aluminum backer.

“Our primary market is theaters and performing art centers,” says Bateman, “But over time, we’ve grown to provide standard and custom solutions for sports stadiums, especially VIP seating/viewing areas. Our vast product line includes, but is not limited to, portable platforms, seating risers, ADA infills and ramps, field stairs, acoustical shells, and VIP seating solutions.”

‡‡         Custom Designs? No Worries

There is no limit to the level of custom design the company can produce for any venue. Neither is their scope limited to North America. As an industry leader in staging equipment, Staging Concepts is able to deliver on an international scale as well.

“At Staging Concepts, we’re all about enhancing the experience,” continues Bateman. Enhancing the fan experience is about giving venues the ability to adapt for specific events. We make equipment that can range from highly custom and permanent to modular and temporary so the venue can make sure they are meeting the changing needs of their customers for a particular event or as trends change and they modify their venue to improve the experience.”

The Staging Concepts team consists of more than 50 in-house engineers who have the knowledge and expertise to produce superior products. These engineers continuously consult with designers and architects around the world to ensure that their equipment will fit customers’ needs.

“As a team,” adds Bateman, “we have a proven track record of almost 30 years of providing durable, reliable, easy to use systems that are designed to last. We pride ourselves on our commitment to our customers as we assist them through design, project management/sales, and installation. Our mission is to turn our customer’s vision into a reality.”

And that turns a home run hit into an epic grand slam.
