Designer Insights by Steve Jennings:
With over 50 millions albums sold, Judas Priest are out on the road for their Firepower tour, celebrating 50 years as one of the greatest metal bands of all time. Singer Rob Halford is still rockin’ it with his iconic vocal style, and let’s not forget the leather & spike outfits and when he comes out on stage on his revved up motorcycle! Tour lighting is once again by lighting designer Tom Horton (Godsmack, Slipknot), who has worked with the band the last 14 years. When Horton had to leave the tour for other commitments, he passed the torch to LD/Co-designer Cosmo Wilson (AC/DC, Scorpions). Wilson was out on the tour until he had to go back to his gig with Aerosmith for their Las Vegas residency and that’s when Bryan Hartley (Trans Siberian Orchestra, Motley Crue), took over the reins. We got a few words from Hartley about lighting the tour.
Hartley toured last year with Judas Priest when he was out with lighting Megadeth and notes, “they treated everyone great and it was an awesome experience. Now to actually be working for them is incredible… I’ve known Tom and Cosmo for years… what great guys !!! I joined the tour that was already in progress for over a year. I wanted to put my spin on it. My connection has always been with the music. I said to Rob Halford, my lighting is very intense because the music is screaming for it. He said do what you do and make it your own. The entire band and crew are great to work with. I programmed the show on a grandMA2, but being a Hog console guy for so long… it was cool to program on the MA2 to achieve what I needed to do. But as with both consoles, it’s all about the end result. Judas Priest! What can I say… such a huge band of my childhood. It’s been amazing to run lights and create to this iconic band’s music!”
