As Bryan Reesman’s “Inside Theater” article on the lighting and scenic design for Hadestown was going to press last month (“To Hadestown and Back”), it was already clear that this production had distinguished itself as one of the top shows on Broadway this year, with 14 Tony nominations. As it turned out, the production was honored with more Tony Awards than any other show at the 73rd annual awards ceremony, held June 9 at Radio City Music Hall and hosted by James Cordon. Hadestown received a total of eight awards, including Best Musical and nods for Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Bradley King), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Rachel Hauck), Best Direction of a Musical (Rachel Chavkin) and Best Sound Design of a Musical (Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz).
