This month’s Buyers Guide ties in with this issue’s focus on lighting for TV and cinema, both of which are lit with the images captured by cameras as a key consideration. Fresnels have been around since French scientist Augustin-Jean Fresnel was studying optics and light waves back in 1822. Today’s lens designs follow the same optical principles, but the light source is different. As with new Softlights, designed to eliminate harsh shadows, all the new Fresnel fixtures use LEDs as the source. And if legacy incandescent fixtures are still in wide use, the future points to LEDs.
