Designer Insights by Steve Jennings
This is Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band on their final tour, having been a staple of Rock ‘n’ Roll music for six decades. Starting in the late ’60’s and with greater success with The Bullet Band in 1975 and onward, with so many major hits to name- Night Moves, We’ve Got Tonight, Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man, Like A Rock, Against The Wind and more. Seger has sold more than 75 million records, is inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to name just a few of his credits. We spoke with Bob Peterson, lighting designer for Seger, about this last trek.
Bob Peterson, LD:
“This was my first job as a tour designer, and I’m so proud to still be a part of the team, for 43 years. In my professional life this accomplishment is the one I am most proud of. As to “the final,” I don’t believe Bob will just walk away, he loves the music and stage too much. I do know this will be the last big arena tour. He might be doing weddings instead, but he’ll still be making music.
“It’s been a real pleasure working with Upstaging’s lighting again, since 2006. Their video supports and equipment package the last two tours have been outstanding. Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band was one of the early, really successful touring clients for Upstaging back in the mid 70’s and they treat us all with tremendous professionalism, respect, and well, friendship. Its been a long time since being in the family garage in Mount Prospect with Robert and Don Carone of Upstaging. Tour manager Bill Blackwell and John Rapp, the tour Security Director have been there through it all, and it’s been nice sharing the adventure with them. Punch Andrews has been Bob’s manager now for 50 years, I’ve learned more about business and negotiation from him than anyone I’ve ever worked with. A special treat is the last few years with longtime friend (Production Manager) Mark Hogue.
Chris Stuba, you cannot ask for a better lighting director. He’s focused, organized, and a music historian. He respects the history of all this and does his level best to assure it stays true to that spirit. Bob (Seger) has really gone into the archives for this tour, and Chris has had to light new songs in most every city. I’m thankful that he’s got deep design chops of his own, but again, still respects the concept ideas in place. I’m lucky to work with him not only here, but on other tours and TV one offs as well. My sincere and deep thanks to Bob Seger and my longtime friends in the Silver Bullet Band. It’s been an adventure of a lifetime, with the best damn soundtrack you could ever have.”
