A lighting console can be thought of as a tool that a lighting artist uses. But different artists require different tools to illuminate their canvases. A DJ facing budget, space and portability constraints may do well to have something small that can operate four moving lights plus a handful of conventional fixtures. An easy-to-learn console with 48 faders might be perfect for a house of worship, whereas a club might need more faders, but not have to go overboard in terms of universes of output. A big rock show, by contrast, might need one of the bigger guns on the market — a desk that can handle hundreds of fixtures and zillions of universes. Here’s a look at what’s out there on the market today.
