Designer Insights by Steve Jennings:
Cory FitzGerald
Lighting Designer
“Working with the Fitz and the Tantrums team has always been an pleasure. The band and crew are some of the hardest working, talented and appreciative people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with! We all met several years ago in New York and started working since then on the last few iterations of their live show. This time around, Fitz wanted something more structural and architectural, combining the style and feel of the newest album with some iconic symbols that would make the stage set up instantly recognizable as their own. We worked for a few weeks on concepts and renders, focusing on a forced perspective geometric idea, something that could change depending on how you view the show and yet remain in the same world. We build the frames to contain a LED pixel tape product, and frosted diffuser so that it was more like an opaqued neon feel, but with video/pixel control.
“Dan Norman and I programmed the show using an MA2 console and Resolume software for the video signal to the pixel frames. The show was built off a series of specific looks per song, and we received a click track with timecode when possible to sync the visuals to the music as much as possible. The set and lighting towers are very modular which is something we needed to stick to with the tight touring schedule and scale of venues and transport options. Ultimately, we wanted as much bang for our buck as possible with the size of show we wanted as well as what we could bring with us, and I think all departments came together and really nailed it. It’s matches the high-energy experience of the band and really fills out the world of their stage to make it a very unique Fitz experience!”
