One of the quirks of lighting design is the hard-to-pinpoint, yet nevertheless very real way it works to shape mood, vibe and feel of a show. Legendary LD Jennifer Tipton, who designs for dance, theater and opera (and turned 79 last month), put it this way: “Ninety-nine percent of an audience does not pay attention to the light, but 100 percent are affected by it.”
