Tour Details

Lighting designer and director Chad Smith just wrapped up Culture Club’s U.S. leg of summer tour dates. Programming about 25-30 songs when he started the tour about a year and a half ago before the U.S. run, Smith had a complete system with PRG Best Boy Spots and Washes, TMB Solaris Flares and Ayrton MagicBlade-Rs as well as a video wall. For this U.S. run, he was given a short time to put together a floor package that he integrated into whatever house system was available at the venues on the tour. The photo here was taken Aug. 16, 2016 at San Francisco’s Warfield Theater.

Designer Insights by Steve Jennings:

Chad Smith
Lighting Designer/Director

“For this leg, we have opted out of using video. So in the original design, I used the [Ayrton] MagicBlades to frame the video screen. At first, I moved the Blades to my floor towers and went with that. But I grew a bit bored of it having changed the floor design. I got rid of the truss towers, it was kind of a typical, obvious design. I moved the movers to the floor and put the blades on nine pipes upstage in a sort of dome shape. It helped me make a backdrop out of lights and the dome shape was inspired by what we wanted to do at the Hollywood Bowl show in LA. It makes for some interesting looks. I used the Elation ACL 360’s on this leg because of availability and they seem to work like the Blades. I’ve used Magic Panels in the past with the band Erasure and I like them because they’re kind of cheesy and this is 80’s pop.”
