LUOYANG, China – Luoyang city, China’s former imperial capital during the Sui (589-618 AD) and Tang dynasties (618-907 AD), is now a major tourist destination, with the Sui and Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park near its center. Along with full-scale replicas of the Ming Tang and Tian Tang towers, the park features a table model to provide a miniature 3D look at the old city’s layout. Christie GS Series laser phosphor projectors are used for backdrop projections to give the tabletop city a life-like feel.

Christie GS Series laser phosphor projectors played an instrumental role in restoring the ancient glory of Luoyang city – China’s former imperial capital during the Sui (589-618 AD) and Tang dynasties (618-907 AD) – with impressive projections on the backdrop of a massive sand table model showcased at a new national heritage park in China’s Henan province.

Located in the center of Luoyang city, the Sui and Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park is constructed on the remnants of the palaces that witnessed the rise and fall of the Sui and Tang dynasties. Among the major highlights of this key tourist attraction are full-scale reconstructions of the original Ming Tang and Tian Tang – iconic towers that symbolized the splendor and opulence during the reign of Tang Dynasty Empress Wu Zetian, the first and only female emperor in China.

During her political heyday, Empress Wu instructed the construction of these two towers, which were described as architectural miracles. Ming Tang was used for meetings with government officials while Tian Tang was reserved for religious ceremonies. Today, the recreated nine-story-high Ming Tang houses a spectacular sand table model of the ancient city of Luoyang, which covers an area of 130 square meters and is built to a scale of 1:800.

Lifelike visuals such as blue skies, birds in flight, junk ships sailing on the river and endless mountains in the background are displayed on the backdrop using five ceiling-mounted Christie DWU555-GS laser phosphor projectors installed by Christie’s valued partner, Wincomn Technology. Equipped with full HD resolution and an impressive illumination life of 20,000 hours, projections from the GS Series create a stunning contrast against realistic buildings, flora and figurines meticulously put together by skilled craftsmen.

“When it comes to the selection of projection systems, the end user is very selective and only wanted the best. They eventually decided on Christie projectors due to their impressive performance, outstanding track record in China and numerous accolades,” said Tony Chen, general manager, Wincomn Technology. “In view of the large projection canvas in the backdrop, five units of Christie DWU555-GS projectors are needed to seamlessly blend the images together to form a complete panorama that brings ancient culture and history to life.”

Chen noted that the Christie GS Series laser phosphor projectors were ideal for this setup due to their long hours of uninterrupted operation.

“The deciding factor was its 20,000 hours of low-cost operation, which was exactly what the end user was looking for. At the same time, the GS Series’ other advantages such as long-lasting brightness, accurate color reproduction, image quality, 24/7 reliability, as well as blending and warping capabilities for curved surfaces, make it the perfect projection solution for such location-based entertainment venues,” he added.

Lin Yu, Vice President, Christie Asia Pacific, commented, “We are honored and excited that our GS Series laser phosphor projectors are selected for use in the new Sui and Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park. At the same time, we’re very pleased to work closely with our valued partner Wincomn Technology on the installation. Over the last few years, interest in lampless projectors has been increasing within the ProAV industry and Christie is well-positioned to deliver these high quality and reliable products to the market. We are optimistic that visitors at this new attraction will be able to appreciate the rich history and heritage of the Sui and Tang Dynasties through these mesmerizing visuals.”

The GS Series is part of a range of laser phosphor projectors that are suitable for various applications. The Christie Captiva Series has an ultra short throw lens and comes in standard HD and ultra-wide aspect ratios making it ideal for tight spaces. It also offers multiple mounting positions, interactivity capabilities and a host of easy-to-use features. The newly launched Christie HS Series, available in WUXGA and HD resolutions, deliver up to 12,000 lumens, Christie BoldColor Technology, a compact design and super-quiet operation.
