“Before the Garbage – 20 Years Queer Tour started, the band had a couple of festival one off’s. At that time the actual tour was conceived, but venues and dates hadn’t been locked down, we just knew it was going to be at the end of summer/fall. I was able to have a quick meeting with the band and do a bit of brain storming and we came up with some great concepts and a general sense of direction to head. Four months later when pencil went to paper almost all of those ideas pretty much went out the window. They were great ideas, but more of a longer tour with more trucks and a bigger budget ideas. Once I did get the drawings and renderings together I had a couple of sit down meetings with singer Shirley Manson and her husband Billy, who happens to be one of the guitar techs and handles playback for the band. We discussed likes and dislikes and where I explained why things are like they are. For instance, Shirley was curious why over the years the designers all present an idea to them that involves towers. I explained that when you are just bringing in a floor package that towers are a good way to get lights in the air rather than just having them all sitting on the floor or on cases, and the trick was to make our towers look different than the towers that the band that played the venue the night before us and the night after us look like. After about two or three passes we had it. It was simple things like LED verses projection, what kind of material for the backdrop and other simple decisions.
“Fortunately budget wasn’t an issue when I was selecting fixtures, the budget issues came later! The primary fixture that I used was the GLP X4 Bar 20. When I first saw video of the tilting LED bars I wasn’t sure that I would ever have an application for them other than using them as cyc light that you can actually tweak the focus on, but once I started drawing this out, the X4 Bars were the first thing that popped into my mind. It has been nice using a fixture that not everyone has seen yet. I used them oriented vertically on the towers and horizontally on the floor, the combination of beams that I was able to create with the different orientations and zooms was incredible. The other fixture that I used was the Sharpy Wash. I just really like the solid chunk of beam that comes out of such a compact fixture. VER was the lighting and video company for the tour, really great to work with and gear that is always new and in tip top condition.
“It was a very gratifying tour, but man was it a lot of work. As well as designer, programmer and director I also had a vendor hat on to top it all off. Days off for me consisted of equipment manifest and dealing with intercontinental shipping. I began programming and doing the R&D of the camera and media server integration and content creation and editing on my days off while I was out on another tour this summer. It is nice to be able to do it all, and unfortunately where budgets are heading these days being able to do it all is going to become more and more necessary.
“Working on this project was just a joy. Every time that I bumped into a band member they were super appreciative and would always comment on how they are getting such amazing feedback about how the show looks from their guests and the fans. All of the band and crew are great. It was an honor working with musicians that had shaped the music that I listened to prior to even forming this band twenty some years ago. The tour operates with a skeleton crew, most crew members are wearing multiple hats, and every one of us are putting 110% everyday. Even the audience was top notch, every night I got the feeling that everyone in the audience truly wanted to be there and were hanging on every second of the show.”
