Years in the Industry: 13

Career Path: “It was all a series of happy accidents.”

First Industry Gig: “I was a sales specialist at a record shop before I started touring. That counts as the music industry, right?”

Mumford and Sons tour photo by Ty JohnsonFirst LD Gig: “The Delays — Southampton Joiners, 2003. Eight PAR cans and a strobe. Weird how it has all come back ‘round to that.”

Heroes/Mentors: “Light artists like James Turrell and Dan Flavin. Actual artists like Bridget Riley and Chris Burden. Fellow lighting designers like Rob Sinclair and Grum Leesmith. Musicians like David Bowie and David Byrne. Mother Nature. Outer space.”

Favorite Past Tours: “The Strokes’ Angles Tour, 2011; Interpol’s Interpol Tour, 2011; MGMT’s Congratulations Tour, 2012; Florence and the Machine Lungs Tour, 2009; Metronomy Love Letters Tour, 2014.”

Whose show designs do you pay attention to these days? “Anyone I can lay my eyes on, which is rare; normally at festivals. Last show that properly blew me away was Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell tour, lit by Marc Janowitz.”

What do you like about what you do? “Almost everything. Especially the ability to create something huge out of nothing.”

Words of Wisdom: “Go for it!”
