PHILADELPHIA — Starlite Productions and local artist, Meg Saligman, teamed up on a projection project that incorporated the architectural features of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. They projected video content onto the Cathedral’s aqua oxidized-copper dome in late September, during Pope Francis’ visit to the city. The imagery was also on display during Philadelphia’s big World Meeting of Families events.

The technology was pretty impressive for a project of this caliber. Starlite used the 40k lumen Barco HDQ-2K40 projector as well as the Hippotizer V4 media server for the project. The crew controlled and shot the projection from across the street on the top floor of a hotel that was in the middle of renovation. The content featured a 15 minute video reel consisting of various religious imagery and symbolizations that was played on a loop every night of the World Meeting of Families.
As you would expect there were many logistical challenges with a project like this, aside from projecting onto an oxidized-copper dome, it was no easy feat getting the 462-pound projector to the top floor. But after months of planning and preparation, this historical project was a success.
