A quick look at the events calendar of the Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center is enough to convince anyone that this is one “multi-purpose” facility that takes its diverse mission seriously. When the Texas A&M Forest Service wants to hold a massive workshop, this center is ready. The next day it might well be hosting a concert or wrestling match at its 5,425 square foot main auditorium, then moving on to an annual Tamale Festival, followed by Breakfast With Santa, before ending the month with a Texas Hold ’Em tournament. Any lighting system used here better be able to wear as many different hats as the center does, which is why the team at Sound Techs (Lufkin, TX) chose the COLORado 1-Quad Tour LED Par from CHAUVET Professional for the recent renovation project at the 27-year-old facility.
“The emphasis was on versatility with this lighting system,” said project manager Brent Barnes of Sound Techs. “The 1-Quad Tours are used as anything from spots to washes and are asked to render a wide variety of color options depending on the event. There are serious workshops where white light is called for and more entertaining events that call for very different lighting; these fixtures fill either role nicely.”
Powered by seven Quad-Color LEDs and featuring five dimming curves; built-in auto and custom programs recalled via DMX and Master/Slave; plus RGBW color mixing with color temperature presets from 3200K to 10000K, the COLORado 1-Quad Tour delivers the performance that Barnes was seeking for the center.
Just as important as the fixture’s versatility to Barnes is its durability. “Aside from needing a fixture that could fill a lot of different roles, we wanted a color mixing LED par that was rugged and could stand the test of time,” he recalled. “It was also very important that the Quad-Color LEDs in this unit gave us a more natural white light. These features and the price point of the Colorado 1-Quad Tour made it the obvious choice for this project.”
Sound Techs installed 40 COLORado 1-Quad Tour fixtures in the center’s main ballroom, which has a 500-seat banquet capacity or theater seating for more than 700. The fixtures are arranged in a simple “front light” configuration with 20 over the stage and 20 over the dance floor.
“The stage area is deep with a permanent dance floor in front of it,” said Barnes. “We get excellent coverage of both the stage and the floor with the lighting rig we put in place.” In keeping with the flexible multi-functional nature of the civic center, the elevated stage can be adjusted from 8’ x 6’ to as large as 48’ x 30’. The COLORado 1-Quad fixtures provide smooth, even coverage through all stage sizes.
Aside from being versatile performers, the COLORado 1-Quad Tour fixtures have also been a good investment for the Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center. “As LED fixtures, the COLORado 1-Quads have lower power consumption, which greatly reduces long-term expense,” said Barnes. “The lower heat generated by the fixtures also lowers the air conditioning costs; plus the fixtures saved money in the initial installation by reducing the number of electrical circuits needed. The new fixtures have been a great investment for the civic center.”
