Designer Insights by Steve Jennings

Tess Falcone

Lighting Director

“I love being on this co-headliner tour with Matt Nathanson & Gavin DeGraw because the two shows are so so different. They each have their own personality, both musically and from a design standpoint, and it makes for a good contrast so the audience isn’t just watching the same thing for 150 minutes. This is the first time that Matt (Nathanson) has ever had a large production show, and Brock Hogan who designed it did a fantastic job of making sure that the show looks great and also that Matt is still comfortable with everything.

“Brock is actually indirectly responsible for getting me interested in lighting, and we are good friends, but we have never worked together in this capacity. It has been fun, and I have learned loads from him about programming and design. He did practically all of the programming, but I was there to throw in my opinion if he ever wanted it.

“Since Matt’s set does not use haze or any other atmospheric elements, the challenge was to find a way to create effects and texture on other surfaces. Brock had the idea to incorporate LED walls and scrunched aluminum scrims. The upstage truss has four columns of LED panels and three 20-foot scrims in between, lit up with Colorblazes. We also have two set carts with scrims and Colorblazes layered on top of LED panels so that we can have the great texture in addition to the video content. The scrims pick up light really well to create unique, subtle looks.

“Brock is a big fan of Vari-Lite fixtures so the VL3000 was an easy choice for our spot fixtures. They’ve been around for a long time but they are still top of the line. The VLXs and Robe Robins both have eye-candy features with their individually-controlled LED engines. This makes them perfect wash fixtures for our set because you can do some neat effects without having to rely on haze. We are fortunate enough to get to use the Colorblazes and scrims exclusively, and this is part of what maintains a separation between the two sets.

“Our video content does not vary show to show, except when the set list changes, which is rather frequently. Matt is from San Francisco, and a lot of his songs are based around his love for the city, so Brock used SF-based content to pay homage to that.

“Our crew is really incredible — They are more experienced than I am, and they have been wonderful about catching me up to speed with how a tour of this size works without making me feel like an idiot. I’m lucky to be spending the summer with them!”
