NEW ORLEANS — Production designer Paul Normandale specified XL Video-supplied Radiant MC-18 Hybrid LED screen for the 74 by 38 foot (WxH) stage backdrop Kings of Leon’s Mechanical Bull tour, which had an extended run of North American shows that will wrap up at the Smoothie King Center here April 11. The tour marked the first time the LED video gear was used in the U.S.

More details from XL Video (www.xlvideo.com):

Normandale specified the screen because the band – who have been judicious in their approach to integrating video into their live shows – this time around wanted a massive upstage LED screen.

Normandale wanted to try something that was new – and – as is his oeuvre – a bit different and slightly quirky.

The 2:1 aspect ratio of the screen is to enhance the cinematic feel of the performance space, and Normandale comments, “When the car spins in the dark … the headlamps really shine!!!”

He received a demo of the MC-18 Hybrid from XL’s Project Manager Phil Mercer in the UK, and then went ahead and added it to his spec

Says Phil Mercer: “It’s great to be working with Kings of Leon again! The combined creative talents of Casey McGrath, Paul Normandale, Phil Woodhead and Video Crew Chief Anthony Cairns are clearly showcased in their most video heavy tour to date”.

XL’s camera package consists of three operated Sony HXC-100 HD cameras, one positioned at FOH, one in the pit and one hand-held onstage, plus a four-way Bradley Cam-Ball 2 robo cam system with units dotted around the stage.

XL’s crew are Engineer Seth Sharpless, PoleCam Operator Steve Jones and LED Techs Chris Isaacson and Michael Cordier.

The tour continues in the US before visiting Europe playing a mix of festivals and own headlining stadium and arena shows.
