MIAMI – There are Spyders in the new Miami home of Univision News and Fusion and ROCA Video USA, Inc. is responsible for putting them there.  ROCA Video has installed Vista Systems Spyder image processors in Newsport, the just-opened 150,000-square foot television production facility that serves the “Noticiero Univision” nightly newcast, the “Primer Impacto” weekday news magazine show, and the new Fusion network.  A groundbreaking joint venture of ABC and Univision, Fusion is the first English-language 24/7 news network targeted to young Hispanics and millennials.

“Two years ago when Univision updated their ‘Noticiero’ studio we installed a Spyder to control a large Barco OL710 display and multiple plasmas,” says Ian Henderson at ROCA Video.  ROCA Video was formed ten years ago in Los Angeles and focuses on providing video presentation services to the Latin entertainment industry for concerts, corporate events and broadcast from offices in LA and Miami.  “In the last year, Univision did a joint venture with ABC and built Newsport, which centralized all their network news studios in one property and offers three new studios and control rooms for many different shows.”

In Newsport, “Noticiero” has repurposed its existing Spyder configuration from the Univision facility.  “Primer Impacto” shares the “Noticiero” Spyder, which it uses to control Barco MVD55 LCD displays and additional monitors. The new Fusion network has its own Spyder 0808 to control both BarcoOL710 and MVD55 displays plus additional monitors; five Spyder outputs control various areas of the new Studio C.  Three network control rooms have access to all the studios in Newsport.

ROCA Video selected Spyder for its ability to run multiple outputs.  “All the studios have OL710 screens running twice HD resolution, 1080 x 3640,” says Henderson.  “We can now take in content and blend it across screens.  It’s an excellent way of manipulating backgrounds and giving operators great flexibility to incorporate live feeds and other feeds into backgrounds.”

Spyder commands are triggered by an automation system enabling preprogramming of events and routines, he adds.  “We create presets and looks on Spyder, which can be triggered externally by the Ross Overdrive studio automation package” Henderson explains.  “In that way just one person cancontrol all these functions.”

Henderson has been impressed by Spyder’s performance with Univision and at the new Newsport facility.  “It’s a unique product that does what it says on the box and provides solutions to problems that people didn’t know existed,” he says.  “Spyder has been an excellent choice.”
