Designer Insights by Steve Jennings

Paul Normandale

Lighting Designer

“Anton Corbijn is the visual director of Depeche Mode… he is like the eyes of the band. When I come in for the process of designing a tour, scribble cad is the best part, a book of sketches from the train and planes… then into cinema 4d and then Vectorworks for the nuts and bolts.  I liked having the big elements in the show as well as the idea of invading the space, be it a video wall or lowering the truss to bring the show to it’s more intimate moments.  Anton provides all the video content to the show and John Scrimpton the video director came up with the I-mag treatments. I play a small part in a great team. It’s always an pleasure to work with the band, Anton and lighting director Graham Feast!”

Graham Feast

Lighting Director

“For Depeche Mode’s 2013 tour I’m running the show on a Wholehog 4. I like the improved user surface, bigger screens, greater functionality of buttons, faster boot and save time… it just feels better, a rock solid console. I worked with Paul (Normandale) on the last tour, so when I programmed the show, we had a pretty good idea of what the feel would be for each part of the show.  Pre-production time can sometimes get a little tight, so the time we were given we used well, but [there was also] a lot of tweaking early on after seeing the first couple of shows — beefing up stuff where needed, as well as peeling back in other places.

“Our fixtures include [Vari*Lite] VL3500’s, [Martin] Mac III’s and Profiles and some new “toys” — the Elidy LED panels, which we use for media footage. We look at the LED levels to get a good balance, not only for the “real” world, but for our video elements so both lighting and video complement each other. It’s a great live show to run, and working with Paul and the team is always great.”
