Designer Insights by Steve Jennings

Nook Schoenfeld

Lighting Designer & Director

“Having designed past Kid Rock tours, for the current tour, he and I collaborate on sets and the video elements of the show. He’s pretty strict about what content I play, but leaves me alone in lighting. After 14 years, I know what he likes and doesn’t. As far as special EFX go, he chooses the pyro cues and I choose the laser effects.

“There’s a new sheriff in town. Steve Carlsen stepped in to some pretty big shoes when he took over for Shakes, the previous production manager for the last 13 years or so. He really stepped up to the plate. New stage managers, new video director. The one constant is, I gotta have my Nocturne guy, John McLeish running the media servers every night !

“We’ve got a big dose of Martin fixtures, I’m not a huge fan of Vari*Lite color systems. Though they do have the best pure blue around. I prefer instruments that can mix purple colors. I think the Vipers are the best hard edge fixture out there. The whole family of them. I put them straight up against the High End, Clay Paky and Vari*Lite hard edge models and they were better suited for my applications.

“We cut the lighting rig in half for this summer run. Kid Rock did a $20 ticket special everywhere. The fans got their money’s worth, and every venue sold out clean. I had to sacrifice the big arena light show for something smaller. But I can still make a tiny light rig look huge when necessary.”
