NEW YORK — Diminutive in stature — she was only 4’8” — Édith Piaf rose from the streets to become a giant in French popular music from 1935 until her death in 1963. The organizers of the annual Francofolies music festivals honored the legacy of the legendary singer, known by a stage name that translates to “sparrow,” with a big production at the Beacon Theater here that included a 25-by-58-foot 8mm LED wall from Upstage Video.

More details from Upstage Video (www.upstagevideo.com):

Upstage Video provided the 25-by-58-foot 8mm LED wall The celebration included an all-star concert by both French and American performers and a full orchestra, performing before a sold-out audience.

Upstage Video provided the huge Color Specific 8mm SMD LED wall that literally covered the entire upstage wall and depicted images of Piaf’s New York. Stars like Harry Connick Jr., Duffy, and Madeleine Peyroux as well as many French superstars performed in front of a dramatic backdrop of Piaf’s name in giant letters, a virtually life-sized image of Times Square and several of Piaf’s home movies.

Although challenged by a short 2-week timeframe and a lot of moving parts, Upstage Video prevailed in delivering the 196 LED tiles that would be needed to build the video wall. “Our clients were located in France, so we were dealing with time differences and language barriers,” says Brian Tyson, National Sales Director for Upstage Video. “The client required a huge surface with different angles, something with great resolution that would show beautifully on TV. We suggested our Color Specific 8mm SMD, and the results were stunning. Our crew worked tirelessly to deliver exactly what the client needed and in the end, we pulled off a flawless show. We were very proud to be part of this great celebration.”
