Designer Insights by Steve Jennings:

We spoke with lighting designer Andre Petrus about going on the road with LMG Touring for Victoria Justice’s amphitheater tour with Big Time Rush.  On the road as lighting director is Jason Loesch who is using a grandMA 2 console to drive the lighting and media server.

Andre Petrus  (Lighting Designer) –

“This tour was a pretty simple one, everything had to fit into one truck. The design had too be easy up, easy down, fast on, and fast off but we couldn’t forget the main purpose of the gear, (light the artist). Keeping in mind it had to be managed by one guy, our options were limited. We have 8mm video walls, plenty of (Clay Paky) Sharpies and (Martin Atomic) Strobes, and we wanted 1500w Profile fixtures. The show is very “in your face.” We didn’t miss any hits. We used time code to trigger the entire show for exact precision. All the video elements in the show go hand in hand with lighting, making for a fun and exciting show. One of the challenges was to give Victoria the big look she wanted but with something that could come off stage in the 15min. changeover between sets.

“I’ve worked with LMG Touring on a hand full of projects. They have a great team of personnel and are really making an impact in the touring market. I am really impressed by some of the great LED products they have exclusive rights to and being that they are full service (Lighting, Video, Audio) the production limits (and budget accommodated) are endless. What sets them apart is the fact that not only do they have high quality gear, but they also do it well.

“The video walls work great, LMG’s 8mm video panels are amazing, if you look at how they are made they make sense. Nice brackets, PowerCon in’s/outs, and locking cat-5 ports. All the LED was built on custom video carts that were engineered by Show Rig. They roll right from the truck and right to stage, we plug them in and with a push of a button the video walls raise to a 19′ trim in seconds giving us a real “set” and made for a much bigger looking show. The best part about how the system was put together is that everything is streamlined. The entire production can clear the stage in 7 minutes.

“This was the first time working with [lighting director] Jason Loesch.  We connected instantly and I think he is an asset to this industry. I think people should keep an eye on him because I believe one day he will be a heavy hitter. This was a great project and I am very pleased with the results. The client was extremely happy with the work we did, so I considered it a job well done. Thanks to LMG Touring for making the tour such a success.”
