MIAMI — Mansion, one of four big nightclubs owned by the Opium group here (the others are Opium Garden, Privé and SET) introduced an new LED lighting installation that arcs over the “star of the night” in the center of the club — the guest DJ. AVLI provided the design and install for the elaborate setup, using a Madrix system for control.

Lead designers Michael Callahan and James Reed of AVLI (a longtime Madrix dealer) and Greg See of Diversified Consulting dedicated more than 300 hours of design and planning to make this project a reality for the 40,000-square-foot club. Once the design was finalized, it took another 800 hours of fabrication and integration. AVLI’s team of installers spent months pulling more than 80,000 feet of cable and rigging supports and more than 6,000 terminations.
The setup makes use of 144 of the system’s possible 256 DMX universes. Data is sent through 19 Art-Net nodes. In all, there are now some 600 double-sided tubes arching above the DJ position. In all, there are some 3,600 1.5W RGB pixels covering a 48-by-60-foot area, setting the interior aglow, along with some 400 meters of LED pixel tape that gets supplemented with various other LED fixtures in the space.
The LEDs complement a video system with high-resolution panels featuring energetic content and I-Mag from ceiling-mounted cameras, driven by an additional Madrix system. In all, 451,279 LED pixels are manipulated by Madrix, making it the largest Madrix-controlled LED environment in the U.S.
The club first unveiled its multi-million dollar redesign on Jan. 21, 2012, opening with guest artist Deadmau5, giving Mansion’s production staff — Graham Wheeler, Jorge Tellez and Michael McEvoy their first opportunity to push the new system to the limit.
