Pro Light + Sound, Frankfurt, Germany, Europe's biggest and most prominent production industry-related trade show, has been gaining in prominence even while the economy has been in a funk. At this year's show there was a good buzz around the halls, suggesting that people were thinking about real business and not just kicking tires. Over 110,000 people attended this year's show, which, while down 2 percent from last year, exceeded expectations. Approximately 82,000 of those were business visitors and the other 28,000 were made up mainly of exhibitors and suppliers. The lighting halls weren't packed to the rafters the whole time, but there was a pretty constant stream of visitors.
It's no surprise that many of the new lighting products on display were LED fixtures, like Wybron's Cygnus and Studio Due's new LED range. More surprising was the emergence of some new LED profile fixtures, marking a new frontier in LED fixtures, including the Martin MAC 350 Entour and Robert Juliat's AledIN.
Exhibitors were clearly spending good money to be at the show. Some, like RCF and D.T.S., seemed to be anticipating a resurgence in the market with large booths. Even exhibitors that were not launching anything new at this show were talking up
the prospect of what they had in the pipeline for later in the year. We just might be in for an exciting PLASA at London's Earls Court this September.
