Avolites Console Helps Il Divo Make Good on “The Promise”

EDMONTON, AB, Canada — In the five years since they were formed by Simon Cowell, Il Divo, a quartet of international vocalists, have created fans across the pop music-classical opera spectrum. For their third world tour, LD Dom Smith is once again using an Avolites console to help the group promote its latest album, The Promise.

The band scored 36 number one chart positions in 26 countries with their first three albums: Il Divo, Ancora and Siempre.

Smith, an early advocate of Avolites, called it “the best console to use for the job,” citing its fixture exchange facility as a case in point.

“There are times on the worldwide tour where we have to use local production, and I truly appreciate being able to easily swap fixtures in and out without having to re-program the whole show,” Smith said, noting the challenge of fitting the rig into smaller venues.

“We have an unusual B-stage setup, which means the rig extends a long way into the arena,” Smith said. “The rig is basically one large necklace shape, which means it’s a whole series of curved structures.”

The rig designed by Nick Whitehouse and Bryan Leitch includes Vari*Lite VL500 80V Wash fixtures, VL3000 Spots, VL3500 Washes, VL5 Washes, Cell Molefeys and Showtec Sunstrips, plus 20 Elements Labs Versa Tube SDs controlled by a Hippocritter attached to the Diamond 4.

Il Divo is currently touring North America until the end of July. The tour then moves to Japan, Australia and the Far East before wrapping up late in the year.
