Wide-Angle i-Pix BB7s Used for Doves U.K. Tour

LONDON — LD Chris Bushell lit the recent U.K. tour for the Doves with new i-Pix BB7 wide-angle fixtures. The new fixtures offer a 20-degree angle dispersion, building upon the standard 10-degree version for i-Pix BB7 fixtures. The Doves tour also gave Bushell a chance to use i-Pix’s BB4 4-lites for the first time. He had previously used the standard i-Pix BB7s on shows for both Amy Winehouse and The Hoosiers.

For the Doves, six BB7s were attached to the top of custom VersaTube racks running along the back of the stage, just downstage of a white cyc, playing a central role in the heavily backlit show.

“Their retro appearance fits perfectly with the band’s style and visual requirements,” Bushell said. “And with the LED lightsource, this was exactly the right combination.”

The BB4s were positioned on the floor, with one unit back-lighting each band member, and two on the floor on both sides of the stage for cross stage washes.

Bushell credited the BBs for their homogenization and smooth light output. He controlled all the cells in each unit individually via the Avolites Diamond 4 Elite console used to run the show. This gave him the option of building some complex and intricate movement and color chases.

“They are extremely punchy, and colors like the blue and purple range are fantastic,” Bushell said.

The majority of the rig was concentrated at low level, with fixtures like Skypans and VersaTubes creating unconventional shapes and encasing the band in the middle of the visuals.

PRG supplied the lighting for the tour, and Bushell worked alongside crew-mates Daniel Bocking and Jake Sullivan.
