Light Sources Stay Discreet in The Living Room

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — The Living Room nightclub chain, with locations in London, Paris, Tokyo and New York, added a new 11,000-square-foot location on Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Riverfront in October, and the location has proved popular enough to warrant plans for a 10,000-square-foot expansion, with additional LED fixtures from Chauvet.

Jay Krause, owner of Sound & Lighting Solutions Inc., designed and installed the lighting. “Looks were very, very important to the client,” Krause said. “We had to hide the lighting because the client didn’t want to see the light sources — they were emphatic about that.”

Krause said he sold the concept of using laser lights on the club’s dance floor.  A total of 14 Chauvet Scorpion laser fixtures were installed and concealed by a 12-foot chandelier. “The room looks like an all-encompassing laser net,” Krause said.

“We used Chauvet because we wanted the Fat Beam laser technology as we believe it is the biggest bang for the buck and the best value,” he added, referring to the Scorpion Sky lasers, which lets users of 10mW lasers legally bypass the need for a variance, normally required for high-powered lasers in the U.S. While high in power, the lasers also conform to IEC safety standards under ClassIIIA.

Although each room in the club has its own feel, the mood and atmosphere can change depending on the clientele using them, according to Krause. “That’s how they cater to their clients,” he said. From a white-on-white mood-changing lounge to a warm and contemporary living loft space to a dance floor featuring a scintillating variety of sight and sound, the lighting is designed to lift the mood of Living Room visitors and awaken their senses.

Krause’s team used a combination of moving head fixtures, strobes, washes and spots to provide the varied moods. The gear list included the ST-750 mega strobe, several MiN Spots, palm-sized LED moving yoke fixtures and LEDrain 56s and 64s, which are narrow beam fixtures. These fixtures, too, must be hidden from the clients’ view.

Vaulted ceilings and odd angles proved to be a challenge when it came time to mount the fixtures. “We had to get special mounts for the lasers and around the bar,” Krause said.  He backlit the room with LEDs, using three colors to bring out different looks.

In addition, 10 CHAUVET LEDrain fixtures were sealed inside weatherproof boxes so they could be used outside the club, which overlooks the riverfront, for downlighting. “We like the way they perform,” Krause said, of the Chauvet fixtures used for  uplighting and backlighting.

Gear list:
(2) ST-750 Strobes, (3) MiN Spots, (8) LEDrain 56s, (2) LEDrain 64s, (2) Scorpion Storms, (5) Intimidator Spot HTIs, (8) Scorpion Skys and (4) Scorpion Storm RGs.
