Croatian Arena Equipped with Chain-hoist System

SPLIT, Croatia — The first newly-built arena to open since Croatia was formed in 1991 opened in late December after 430 days of construction. The arena’s 28,500-square-meter hall, with a seating capacity of 12,000, has been equipped with a chain-hoist system using hoists and a controller made by ChainMaster. Arena planners had examined several comparable projects and were impressed by the chain-hoist system that ChainMaster had installed in the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany in 2005.

ChainMaster delivered four 6,000 kg BGV-C1 JumboLifts with absolute value encoders and load cells in variable speed VarioLift versions. The system includes a computerized controller and a switching cabinet for the positioning of the central video cube.

The ChainMaster computerized controller for the arena in Split also features an emergency lowering system operated by a key switch that can be used in case of breakdown. When the key switch is activated, the video cube is lowered at a predetermined speed. A manual controller integrated into the control cabinet offers an alternative control option.

For the scoreboards of the Spaladium Arena, ChainMaster has also installed four 500 kg BGV-C1 chain hoists with incremental encoders and load cells. The control and supervision of the chain hoists is performed using the new proTouch control system developed by ChainMaster.

The Spaladium Arena will serve as a venue for the upcoming World Handball Championship 2009, which will be taking place in Croatia from Jan. 16 to Feb. 1.
