NEW YORK — LD Lee Rose of Design Partners Inc. used Robe’s ColorSpot 1200E ATs and REDWash 3-192 LED wash lights for portions of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve aired on ABC. Dick Clark has hosted the show since 1973. Since 2005, Ryan Seacrest has hosted the outdoor show in Times Square with Clark based in a studio. The four-hour show includes pre-recorded musical segments aired after the Ball Drop. This year, these were filmed at Stage 1 of Center Staging Studios in Burbank. PRG's LA office supplied the lighting equipment, and Rose worked with Bruce Ryan, production designer, for Larry Klein, the show’s producer. Rose has been involved with the annual show since 1985.
The segments were taped on two performance stages, and for these, 12 Robe ColorSpot 1200s and two REDWash 3•192s were used. The ColorSpot 1200s were positioned on the floor, and used for aerial effects. The REDWash 3•192s were used behind the show’s California party host, Fergie. The 2009 show was the first that Rose had used Robe fixtures.
Along with the brightness and speed of movement, Rose said he liked the rectangular shape of the lightsource in the REDWashes and the way the light, color and animations looked on camera. Paul Lennon using a Virtuoso console to program the Robe gear and the other moving lights.
This year’s music sections featured performances by Fall Out Boy, Natasha Bedingfield, Solange, Robin Thicke, Will.i.am and Jesse McCartney.
