Dormant Volcano Erupts in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — After a $25 million facelift, MGM’s Mirage casino relaunched its Volcano attraction, which features a choreographed dance of flames, lighting, fountains and fireballs comparable to WET Design’s other big Strip attraction, the Fountains of Bellagio. There are 120 of WET Design’s custom-made FireShooters positioned in and around in the volcano and its three-acre lagoon. The largest FireShooter shoots a 60-foot-high flame from the volcano’s peak. Others shoot off four-foot fireballs 12 feet into the air.

"In its prior incarnation, the action stayed primarily on top of the volcano," said Jim Doyle, WET's director of special technologies. "We've not only created a much more realistic eruption, but we've taken the action down into the lagoon, where spectators will feel the heat on their faces."

A fiery spray of water also shoots 120 feet in the air during the 4.5-minute show, which takes place hourly. The bursts of flame, water and lighting are synchronized to music composed by Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and Indian tabla performer Zakir Hussain.

Hart and Hussain attending the fireworks display that marked the rebirth of the volcano, along with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Terry Fator and Robbie Knievel, who will attempt to jump over the volcano during a New Year’s Eve motorcycle stunt. The attraction first opened in 1989.
