MIAMI BEACH, FL — Energy-guzzling conventional fixtures would have clashed with the shade of green that prevailed at Green Art Fair Miami, part of Art Basel 08 held recently at the Miami Beach Convention Center. So Nick Assunto, CEO of Visual Formula, lit the fair using 82 solar- and biodiesel-powered Chauvet LED wash fixtures instead. The gear included ColoRado 1, ColoRado 3, LEDsplash-2 and Q-Wash LED fixtures. Green Art Fair Miami was staged in three adjoining 5,000-square-foot tents made from recycled fabric and aluminum. It brought together some 15,000 artists, curators, designers and others to art exhibits and a fashion show featuring environmentally-aware art and design ideas. In addition to is utilitarian role, Assunto’s lighting was itself catalogued as an art project with the title, “100 percent LED.”
“The whole idea came up because of energy conservation and LED fixtures do just that,” Assunto said. The green fair is in its second year, but it’s the first year that Visual Formula, a lighting installer for clubs and high-end residences, has participated.
“We’re crazy about LED technology,” said Assunto. “We’re lighting up the whole canvas with changing color. And we’re lighting every single exhibit with LED as well.” The lower power requirements of the LEDs also helped simplify the power run and reduce the heat generated from the lighting fixtures.
Green Art Fair Miami’08 also included a restaurant committed to creating and preparing gourmet foods that were organically grown and naturally produced, a green learning center and “eco-mentaries” — short films from around the world that showcased examples of environmental sustainability.
