GALATI and TECUCI, Romania — Daily life has changed for most of the residents of Galati and Tecuci, located near the border with Modavia and Ukraine, and so have the nights, with color-changing washes used on landmark buildings. The installation uses IP65-rated projectors from Clay Paky equipped with color diffusion filters, including 15 CP Color 150s and eight CP Color 575s. “Lighting buildings is a new concept in Romania that serves a dual purpose: embellishing the city buildings and creating a real attraction for all citizens. These interventions make the city more livable,” said Viorel Chirila, an architect who worked with LD Ion Calescu on the project.
Dan Lilion Gogoncea, head of Galati’s chamber of commerce, commissioned the installation, which started with the Galati County Council, a residence for Nicolae CeauÅŸescu, the former general secretary of the Romanian Communist Party who was ousted in 1989.
Calescu and Chirila also lit the exterior of the offices for FPIMM, a small business organization, and the Galati chamber of commerce as well, a structure built to honor Alexander Ioan Cuza, who helped unite Romania from three separate parts in 1859.
Calescu’s company, PRO Dance Company, control the color changers via DMX signals so adjacent building color changes can simultaneously match or contrast.
“We relied on the CP Colors for a number of reasons, not the least of which was that they used half as much electricity as other projectors with similar features,” said Calescu, who also spoke favorably of the instruments’ luminosity, saturated and pure colors and reliability.
Chamber officials are pleased with the result, noting how many residents and visitors now use the lit buildings as a backdrop for keepsake photographs.
