I once saw a show where the fog on stage was so thick that – I’m not making this up – you couldn’t see the drummer on stage. I’m no expert, but when your lighting enhancement become a visual obstacle, perhaps you’ve crossed the line. On the other hand, good fog or haze is the key to good aerials. I recently lit a small tour where we did seven shows across the country. On the sixth night I got all manner of complements on the lighting. Why? It was the same show with the same rig, same performers, same cues, same everything. The difference was the haze. That night we had a great haze in the air. You could see the lighting for the first time and as a result the show was far better. When it comes to aerials, a little fog will do ya.
