A few tricks and Elvis Strobes?

Share this Post:

Today I’m going to start filling you all in on exactly what I’ve been writing lately in my notebook. There are three main topics: A couple cue ideas, and Casino Arizona lights. For starters I wrote a new trick I like to use when there is a dynamic arrangement in the song.

Hypothetically let’s say its two big hits we’ll name 1 and 2. For “1” cue lets say the look I created is green with a circle gobo. I’ll then look for the neighboring color and gobo on the wheels so the change can be as clean as possible. So let’s say the neighboring color and gobo are yellow and square. They will be my “2” cue and you’ll have a clean transition between the two cues to hit them back and forth for follow the arrangement quickly and efficiently. Being involved with music over the years has let me to listening to sorts. One of my favorite bands as of late is named Porcupine Tree from the United Kingdom. I found myself listening to the single “Fear of a Blank Planet.” In the lyrics it says, “Sunlight coming through the haze.” These words instantly threw so ideas around up in my head. I thought of a huge studio scoop with a big light amber or yellow gel (depends on what part of the day you’re trying to convey) framed around it, mounted on a mid point of truss with a light fog running in front of the fixture. This is just another way of trying to really fine tune lighting to lyricism. Check out their music video for the song at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUnAxegUJu0. The videography captures the lyrics appropriately too!

I had a fun experience at Casino Arizona once before a gig. I went in to chill and lose some money (I never win in Casinos!). Anyways I had to wait there for a few hours until my ride came to pick me up. I eventually noticed that Elvis is the building over in the show room. Now if you have read my blog before you know that anytime I am attending a show I’m writing down what their rig looks like. Casino Arizona was no different, I loved the Elvis show because the band rocked, one out of three female dancers was cute, and he looked a lot like Elvis. It was also quite a treat to see rocj and roll strobes to Elvis tunes on cue. Kudos to whomever the LD was. From what I saw the rig consisted of:  8 Techno beams, 6 Studio Colors, 2 Martin Mac 250s, ACL Par Bars, 1 Follow spot, Pars with color scrolls, and an LED backdrop. I may be a bit inaccurate though, after all I couldn’t help but drink the complimentary Heinekens! So even though I lost some money I got to have just a little bit of fun =)
